Last night, just after 10pm, I walked to the top end of Paxcroft Mead - where the road heads for Semington - and climbed the cairn by the roundabout to see if I could see the Jubilee Beacon on Westbury White Horse being lit. I certainly saw that, and from all the headlights shining in the evening sky, there must have been a big crowd up there. But not only did I see the Westbury beacon being lit, but a whole chain lighting up, all across the skyline, arcing from the hills above Frome and Warminster round to those above Devizes and Calne. Some were accompanied by firework displays. I could even see more distant beacons in the clear night sky - most likely on the Downs to the east of Devizes. There was a real sense of communities linking up with each - just as was intended - and to add to the whole spectacle, a huge new moon was rising over Westbury Downs. I stepped outside on a whim and there as an incredible sight!
