A Trowbridge shopping centre has announced that it will be undergoing a makeover to encourage more business.

The Shires Shopping Centre is hoping to spend £500,000 to redevelop its look which will hopefully impress Trowbridge residents and shoppers who come from other areas.

Over the last few months shops have relocated from The Shires with some closing for good.

Argos moved to the new Gateway centre which was built opposite The Shires and The Early Learning Centre closed despite doing business for many years in the town.

Peacocks and Bonmarche are also under threat as there future has been reported as uncertain which would leave two more plots in the centre empty.

S.K Fruits was the latest business to move out of The Shires after it became too expensive to keep their plot. It has now moved to competitive shopping centre Castle Place.

The Shires Shopping Centre last saw improvements in 1990.

Do you think a makeover will bring more businesses to Trowbridge? Comment below!

One of the problems with The Shires is that the centre now has getting on for 6 mobile phone shops and the toilets (including the ladies) smells like a stable.

30,000 new floor tiles won't bring people in, get a better variety of shops, lower the rents (although this is down the Workman Group) and sort out the stench in the loos.

I spoke to someone who works at the centre and their response was "well, it's the mobile phone shops that are always busy". True, but if people want to do actual shopping for leisure (clothes, shoe and CD buying etc) they're going to go to Bath or Bristol.

We looked at moving our shop into The Shires but it would cost 20 times what it costs us in our current location.

Price one of your oldest customers out of the market, then spend a half million to make sure you price even more out? Idiots!

    Basically, retail is dying.
The UK's run out of money, it doesn't matter how pretty you make the shopfronts - too many shops chasing too few pounds. You'd think these people would have heard of 'supply and demand' somewhere in their education.

If you're going to spend half a mill, build a factory/office for a business that exports products/services. To China, preferably.
